Introducing our guests: Marc Marot, CEO of Crown Talent & Media Group

The 5th Vienna Music Business Research Days will be held at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna from Oct 1-3, 2014.  A mixed group of music business professionals and music business researcher will highlight the question on “How to Monetize Music in the Digital Age” from different perspectives. All conference guest that will present/discuss on Oct 2, 2014 in Joseph Haydn-Hall will be introduced in a short blog series.

Marc Marot is one of the panelists in discussing the question “How to Monetize Music in the Digital Age” on Oct 2 from 16:00-17:30 in Joseph Haydn-Hall.

Marc_Marot_photoMarc Marot has worked with some of the UK’s most successful artists over the past 33 years.

He started as a musician (Van der Graaf Generator) but moved over to music publishing at the beginning of the 1980’s running Chris Blackwell’s Blue Mountain Music, the music publisher U2, Bob Marley and many others. He went on to run each of the Island companies over the course of the next 18 years including ten years as the president Island records ltd. In 1996 he merged Island, Universal and MCA records into its current structure, which is now the most successful record label in the UK.

DawnThe CranberriesThe OrbTalvin SinghTrickyNine Inch NailsChaka Demus & Pliers and Elbow. As the head of the label Marot worked closely with U2 on all albums from ‘Achtung Baby’ to ‘All you can’t leave behind’.

The Mercury Music Prize started in 1992, was dominated by Island acts in the 1990s. The company scored 12 nominations and two wins in the first eight years of the awards. Artists signed under Marot’s tenure have subsequently gone on to win a quarter of all the album of the year awards over the Mercury Music Prize’s 20 year history.

As a manager, Marot has worked with Richard Ashcroft, Paul Oakenfold, Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens), Lemon Jelly and the Audio Bully’s. He is currently the Chairman of the Crown Talent and Media group, which manages Jessie J, Union J, Maya Jane Coles and the Sugarbabes amongst a roster of 20 acts. The company also manages a number of sports stars including Formula 1 racing driver Max Chilton, who made his debut in 2013.
