International Journal of Music Business Research – October 2019, vol. 8, no. 2

The October 2019 issue comprises of three articles covering the full range of music business research. In the first article “Achievement in the South Korean Music Industry” by Björn Boman (Stockholm University) the production system and the industry structures of K-Pop are critically reflected.

In the second article “Giving In: Crowdfunding for musical concerts in India” the authors Anirudh Tagat, Hansika Kapoor & Anurag Tagathighlight the role of crowdfunding for the independent Indian concert business.

In the third and last contribution of this October issue, Tamara Golicnik of the University of Ljubliana researches the application of the balanced scorecard for freelance pianists.

A book review by Martin Ivan Mikulik on “Spotify Teardown: Inside the Black Box of Streaming Music” (Maria Eriksson, Rasmus Fleischer, Anna Johansson, Pelle Snickars & Patrick Vonderau) rounds up the IJMBR’s October 2019 issue.

Introducing our guests: Kieran Garvey (Cambridge University)

Foto Kieran GarveyThe 6th Vienna Music Business Research Days 2015 focus on “Financing Music in the Digital Age”. International experts and academics discuss new and alternative revenue sources for the music scene such as music streaming for the classic music business, crowdfunding and business angel funding.

Since Bryan Zhang cannot participate in the Vienna Music Business Research Days 2015 due to health problems, his colleague, Kieran Garvey, will talk about “Alterative Financing of Music” in Joseph Haydn-Hall from 11:45-12:30 on October 1.

Kieran Garvey is the Policy Programmes Manager and Research Associate at the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance, helping to coordinate and deliver the Centre’s world class, alternative finance benchmarking reports. He is also involved in developing the Centre’s policy development networks, seeking to balance the promotion of financial innovation in the industry, while also ensuring investor interests are safeguarded.

Previously, Kieran was the Head of Partnership at Crowdcube, a leading equity crowdfunding platform, where he helped establish their presence in London and Northern England. He was also responsible for sourcing and securing 40 companies that went on to raise over €20 million. His role focussed on building strategic partnerships with a wide array of organisations, supporting all manner of entrepreneurs across a wide range of sectors and stages.

Prior to this, Kieran was a Parliamentary Crowdfunding Advisor helping to establish the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Crowdfunding and Non-Bank Finance. He also ran the day-to-day operations of the UK Crowdfunding Association, representing all crowdfunding models to promote the sector as a valuable and viable means to raise funds to the public, press and policymakers. Before this, he established a microfinance venture in Vietnam, inspired by Kiva.

Bryan Zhang, who is Director of Operations & Policy of the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance of the University of Cambridge Judge Business School will highlight “Alternative Financing for Music” and will give special insights into the international landscape of music crowdfunding in Joseph Haydn-Hall from 11:45-12:30 on October 1st, 2015.

Bryan Zhang is a co-author of four industry reports on the state of alternative finance both at national and international levels. Bryan has advised and consulted for numerous businesses and institutions including the Royal Society of Arts, the British Business Bank, Ben & Jerry’s, the Department of International Development and the European Commission. He is also a Research Fellow in Finance at the Judge Business School.

[Update]: Due to health problems, Bryan Zhang won’t be able to come to Vienna. Instead, Kieran Garvey, Research Programmme Manager of the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance of the University of Cambridge Judge Business School will talk on “Alternative Financing of Music” in Joseph Haydn-Hall from 11:45-12:30 on October 1st, 2015.

International Journal of Music Business Research – April 2015, vol. 4, no. 1

The April issue of the International Journal of Music Business Business Research is now available online. This special issue – edited by Martin Lücke (professor at Macromedia University of Applied Sciences Berlin) and Carsten Winter (professor at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media – focuses on the German music economy. In the first article, Helmut Scherer & Carsten Winter (both full professors at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media) discuss success factors for music-based crowdfunding in Germany. Ronny Gey (University Jena), Frank Schumacher, Stephan Klingner (both University Leipzig) and Bettina Schasse de Araujo (Institute for Applied Informatics) highlight the conflict between artistic and economic rationales in a shrinking recorded music market that negatively affects creative and innovative processes in the music industry. In the third article David-Emil Wickström (Pop Academy Baden-Württemberg), Martin Lücke and Anita Jóri (both Macromedia University of Applied Sciences Berlin) discuss the higher education of musicians and music industry workers within the field of Popular Music in Germany.
